Maintenance: Maintaining breather plates in top condition is very important. Breather plates should be inspected for any damage, nicks, burrs, etc. Any damage found can be removed by applying water to the damaged area then using generous pressure to slide a diamond whetstone over the area until it is repaired. Contact Tomahawk for more information regarding proper tooling care.
Inspection: Inspecting breather plates is critical to ensure optimal tooling and machine performance. Inspecting a breather plate for damage should be done routinely and repaired as needed. Common damage on breather plates could include:
- Missing chrome, bowed incorrectly, dents, grooves, cracked holes, etc.
- Customers can send breather plates to Tomahawk for evaluation and rework.
Ideal Working Surface: Breather plates wear against the mold plate as the mold plate cycles through the filling and knock out processes. The breather plate should have a gentle concave bow (0.015” max.) on the working surface of the breather plate. The working surface is the surface that contacts the mold plate.
